Acne Laser Treatment

Acne Laser Treatment

Acne generally begins in adolescence, affecting most teenagers at one time or another. Adults do suffer with acne but even then it is often due to the same type of hormonal imbalance as with those going through puberty (monthly menstrual cycles, pregnancy, etc.). Another common trigger is stress which occurs equally in both men and women.

With pre-teens and teens the chemical and hormonal imbalances of puberty is most likely the beginning of their acne woes, but factors such as diet, life style and even the stress of what is taking place in their body’s play an important role in what is happening with their skin. At this time acne can present in several ways with the two most common being blackheads and whiteheads.

When the sebaceous glands produce too much oil (common during puberty) excess oil and dirt can get trapped and even impacted in the glands resulting in blackheads. Often this type of outbreak can be successfully treated with a diet change and more stringent hygiene practices. In more pronounced cases a blackhead remover can be used to help extract the clogged mass.

Whiteheads are actually the result of a bacterial infection. Some bacterium is normal on the face and upper body area picked up throughout the day; it grows naturally on the skin as well. These outbreaks too, can be treated with diet changes that include more healthy choices and less processed, fried or sugary food products. For this type of blemish a quick remedy might include an acne laser treatment that offers up to an 80% positive result.

An acne laser treatment prevents the recurrence of acne because it burns away problem follicles as well as the sebaceous glands in the area killing the bacteria as it does so. There are few side effects with laser treatments (redness, tender to the touch for some types) but most are painless displaying only some peeling skin. Many people only need one treatment, but those with more severe outbreaks that are persistent eight treatments over a four week period may be necessary.

Although the acne laser treatment is a relatively new addition in the field of treatment, and testing has not been extensive to date several prominent controlled settings have successfully yielded good results from the pulsed dye laser showing reduced acne after just the first treatment. The infrared laser has been shown to reduce acne lesions by about 80% in just three treatments.
